The UK to Experience Cruel Britannia This April

You know, several times a day we think about how cool it would be to open up shoppe across the pond so that we could easily be there for all of the great shit they have going on. Film4 Frightfest, great Blu-ray editions we get the shaft on here, the seductive usage of the word"randy"... so very much to love. Now, to further make us drool The Horror Channel UK ((yes, they have one of those there too) is churning out another dosage of fright to get fans watching the carnage,Cruel Britannia.

From the Press Release
The UK to Experience Cruel Britannia This AprilCRUEL BRITANNIA: The Cutting Edge of British Horror

April 8– April 29, 2011

The Horror Channel celebrates the best of contemporary British horror with a special season of UK TV premieres which showcases some of the finest home-grown directorial talent around.

Kick-starting the season on Friday 8th April is the UK TV premiere of Steven Sheil’s debut feature MUM& DAD - a film described as“one of the defining British horrors of its generation”. Imbued with a terrifying ferocity, it centres around a young Polish immigrant (Holby City’s Olga Fedori) who finds herself imprisoned in a suburban House of Horrors. It also stars Perry Benson (This Is England, Somers Town).

Sheil reflects:“The key to the horror lies in the perversion of parenthood: taking something quite normal and giving it a nasty twist.”

This is followed by the UK TV premiere of Gerard Johnson’s debut, the dark, brutal and bleakly amusing TONY: LONDON SERIAL KILLER, transmitting on Friday 15 April. It has drawn favourable comparisons to John McNaughton’s seminal Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and features a star-making lead performance from Peter Ferdinando - probably the most alarming cinematic anti-hero since Taxi Driver’s Travis Bickle.

Johnson explains:“I want the film to lodge in the mind and shake the viewer a bit. We can all meet somebody like Tony. The fact that he is a real human being is probably the most frightening aspect. He is not some exaggerated killer with a hockey mask”.

Next up is the UK TV premiere of SALVAGE, directed by Lawrence Gough, which screens on Friday 22nd April. Starring Neve McIntosh and Shaun Dooley, this“instant British horror classic” focuses on the residents of a quiet English cul-de-sac who are suddenly plunged into a world of violence and paranoia when a special military unit arrives. The threat is more monstrous than any of them could ever imagine…

Gough says:“I find horror a fascinating subject to explore. For me, the key to it is to look at human beings and discover what they can potentially do to each other. The horrific consequences of this fuelled the core idea for Salvage”..

Finally, there is the UK TV premiere of Simon Rumley’s critically-acclaimed THE LIVING AND THE DEAD, which screens on Friday 29th April. Starring Roger Lloyd Pack, Kate Fahy and Leo Bill, the film is a truly nightmarish experience as we watch an aristocratic, impoverished and reclusive family descend into madness and self-destruction.

As Simon comments:“The emotional context of the film is a truly horrific one and because of this I was also keen to make the film a truly disturbing experience, the reality of which I wouldn't wish on anyone”.

Each movie is accompanied by a filmed intro with the directors and the season is promoted on-air with some specially shot sequences presented by femme fatale Emily Booth (pictured below).

Indie Horror Month - Exclusive: Jacy Gross Talks The Revenant

Undoubtedly, the heart and soul ofThe Revenantare best friends Bart (David Anders) and Joey (Chris Wylde) but as the saying goes, for every good man there’s an equally good woman (or two in this instance) behind them. Balancing out the testosterone on the set of the film were actresses Jacy Gross and Louise Griffiths.

We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Gross, who plays level headed Wiccan Mathilda in the film who also serves as the film’s voice of reason, to talk about her experiences on the film and discuss the challenges of working in independent cinema.

Gross had a hunch from the start that collaborating with writer/director Kerry Prior would be unlike anything she had experienced ever in her career.

“The producers forThe Revenant(review here)really had their choice when it came to actresses for my part so I felt pretty lucky that I landed the role,”explained Gross.“It was my first experience as an actress where I grabbed a role while I was still in the audition. It was amazing- Kerry was so collaborative, even while auditioning.”

Indie Horror Month - Exclusive: Jacy Gross Talks The Revenant

“I thought this was going to be one of those cases where I go in and in 10 minutes I’m done but I ended up being in there for over an hour and a half. Kerry just kept challenging me with different approaches to the script which is why I knew I wanted to be a part of this movie from the moment Istepped on the stage to read for him,”Gross added.

In yesterday’s interview with Wylde, he discussed the amount of bonding that happened between him and fellow cast member Anders. For Gross though, her experiences were a little different while working onThe Revenantbut the actress said that the difference made perfect sense to her.“The girls didn’t really get the same treatment as the boys did just because the movie was far more about them than it was our characters so my first real bonding experience with everyone didn’t come until we did a read-through right before we started shooting. I just remember we started early in the morning and we were at this sleazy dive of a bar drinking bloody mary's which I think was the perfect atmosphere, considering the tone of The Revenant.”

“Watching David and Chris go back and forth was hilarious though- Louise and I could barely get a word in edgewise but that was perfect for the kind of roles we were playing. Specifically, my character is more about reacting to Bart and Joey so it made sense they’d even take over the read-through. But I absolutely loved the energy both of those guys brought to The Revenant- they really are the heart of this movie,”added Gross.

In the film, friends Bart and Joey have to deal with the fact that Bart has returned from the grave as a revenant and even though the script is filled with many darkly humorous moments, it was Gross’s character Mathilda that had to try and reason with the insanity of the movie’s main duo.

Gross said,“I saw her as the kind of character that takes herself very seriously and she is ultimately right by the end of The Revenant, even if being right is a bit bittersweet. She knows that Bart being back isn’t natural and she’s trying to help, but she just does it in ways that don’t necessarilyhelp with a situation like that. Her motives were pure but she just had a funny way of carrying out those motives that just made a bad situation ultimately a lot worse in the end.”

Even though other actors had difficulties with the rigors of such an ambitious shoot, Gross said she felt like the insane shooting schedule they were on forThe Revenantonly enhanced the vibe of the movie.“It’s so hard keeping the kind of hours we did on this shoot but I was luckier than most because I didn’t work as many days as David or Chris. I would definitely say they had it a lot worse than I did. I think though considering the tone of the movie that it was absolutely perfect we’d shoot at these ridiculous hours though because you get such a different vibe at that time of the night. There’s a weird electricity that runs through Hollywood in the middle of night and I feel like audiences can sense that vibe when they’re watching the movie.”

“I think it’s safe to say that challenges aside, we all had fun on set even though we were pushed to our limits every single day. Kerry’s script was so well-written that I never really felt like I was working at all when I was delivering his lines. It’s been one of the best experiences I’ve had in my career so far,”Gross added.

For Gross, who has balanced her career filled with studio and independent projects alike, the hardships that have presented themselves while makingThe Revenantand the long journey that has followed wasn’t much of a surprise to her. She said the obstacles will only makeThe Revenant’seventual release all the more sweeter.

“I love the challenge of independent filmmaking but it can also be a very hard path for an actress to follow,”explained Gross.“I’ve worked on a few films that have never screened even once so it’s wonderful that The Revenant has had legs over the last few years playing festivals everywhere even if we haven’t been able to officially release the film yet.”

“We’ve gotten a lot of great responses to the film too over the last few years which is a testament to Kerry. He’s been so dedicated to this movie since day one, he deserves every compliment this movie gets. It can be hard waiting this long to find out what is going to happen with The Revenant but it’s beginning to sound like something will be happening soon and I couldn’t be more excited to see what the news will be,”added Gross.

Charlie Sheen on the Walking Dead Season 2? Plus The Top 10 Charlie Sheen Movies Every Genre Fan Should See

Here's an interesting and completely unexpected news item coming in for everyone's favorite Chernobyl-like celebrity, Charlie Sheen. It seems as if since his schedule is now free, he could be appearing on, of all things, Season 2 of the"The Walking Dead".

Plus The Top 10 Charlie Sheen Movies Every Genre Fan Should SeeAccording toThe Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed BlogRobert Kirkman, writer of the graphic novels and executive producer of the hit AMC television series, tells THR he would love Sheen to appear in the second season.

"Charlie call us, we will totally make that happen! We'll do whatever you want. We'll recast YOU as Rick,"says Kirkman, still speaking to Sheen with tongue very much in cheek."Andrew Lincoln will find something else to do."

Other options?"He can direct an episode,"says Kirkman."Actually (Sheen) could play a car for all I care,"he adds."He's awesome."

Though Kirkman's obviously kidding (we think), this got us wondering ... Has Sheen ever made any horror movies? So we did a little investigating and came up with a list of the closest he's come, and though some aren't what you would call horror, they'd still appeal to every fan of the genre. Dig it!

The Top 10 Charlie Sheen Movies Every Genre Fan Should See

Red Dawn
Charlie plays Matt, the brother of Patrick Swayze's character, Jed, in this totally awesome 80's Cold War scare action flick. WOLVERINES!!!!

Young Guns
Possibly one of the single greatest 80's films ever. If you don't have an appreciation for this film on at least a small level, you may not be breathing anymore.

The Wraith
If you've done nothing wrong, you've got nothing to fear! One of my all time favorite movies from when I was a kid. Clint Howard is in it, too, so it's just that much better!

"Amazing Stories"
One of my favorite shows of the 80's! I used to watch it all the time with my grandparents. Charlie shows up inNo Day at the Beach.

The Arrival
Stop watching the skies, start watching your back! This movie would be awesome if they remade it with Vatican Assassin Warlocks.

The Boys Next Door
Two clean cut kids go batshit crazy and start killing people left and right.

Navy Seals
Oh,Navy Seals! Yet another flat-out ridiculous action film. This time Sheen stars next to genre fav Michael Biehn.

Platoon
A great all star cast rounds out Oliver Stone's classic war film based on his own experiences in Vietnam.

Wisdom
This is really Emilio Estevez's film, but Sheen makes an appearance as his manager at City Burger.

Out of The Darkness
In another cameo, Sheen only briefly appears in this made-for-TV film about the Son of Sam. Catch him as Man Shaving. Not one of his finer roles obviously that he landed most likely thanks to Martin Sheen, who snags a starring role.

BONUS CLIP
"His blood is yours. You know my dad said that once you do that, there's gonna be something different about you. Always."Is this the secret to Charlie's WINNING??!?!!? It ain't tiger blood, but it'll do I guess.

Trailer and Airdate for Giant Gypsy Curse Killer Bird Flick Roadkill

It comes as no surprise that the trailer for RHI Entertainment'sRoadkillwould quickly pop up online once Syfy announced the Stephen Rea-starring monster movie's April 23rd premiere date. More surprising is that this Syfy movie about hit& run, gypsy curses, and a giant bird of prey doesn't look too shabby.

Trailer and Airdate for Giant Gypsy Curse Killer Bird Flick RoadkillKate and her brother, Joel, have gathered their five best friends for a scenic RV road trip to their high school reunion. But their cross-country adventure is about to take an unexpected turn for the worst when an ancient curse takes wing by way of a massive creature. It’s called the Simuroc, and this gigantic bird of prey has found the perfect, helpless quarry in Kate and company. Stranded in the backwoods of the predator’s territory, there’s little chance for escape.

I really don't think the titleRoadkillsuits a movie with a premise like that. Still probably a better title than my idea of calling itSquawk Me to Hell.

Eliza Bennet (Inkheart,Nanny McPhee), Kacey Barnfield (Resident Evil: Afterlife,Lake Placid 3), and Stephen Rea (V for Vendetta,Citizen X, and Oscar nominated Best Actor forThe Crying Game) star in this creature feature from director Johannes Roberts (When Evil Calls,Forest of the Damned) and writer Rick Suvalle ("V.I.P.").Roadkillpremieres on Syfy Saturday, April 23rd, at 9/8 Central with the usual midnight repeat.

RHI has posted theRoadkilltrailer, and I must say this looks much better than expected. It also for some reason leaves me really wanting to see a big budget Hollywood remake ofThe Giant Claw.
