Editorial: Haberman's Maniacal Musings - The Most EPIC Poster Ever

Hello people. I come bearing a gift. If you’ve seen it, enjoy revisiting. If you haven’t, prepare to be as spellbound as I have been this afternoon. I present to you one of the most extraordinarily epic works of film art I’ve ever seen.

From 1977 came:THE WHITE BUFFALO!

Had no idea this film existed. None. JUST found this by accident while searching for something else, and now my life has taken a dramatic turn. When something like this hits you, a freakish tornado of emotions can begin to rock the ribcage. Do you seek out the film immediately to celebrate your discovery, or do you let your imagination send your soul on an awesome journey of what must be unparalleled and unbridled cinematic ecstasy?

I think I’m gonna simmer in the frothy broth of expectation for a few months. I’ll look at this artwork each day until around May or so, then I’ll attempt to find the thing. Film Foreplay.

A quick Google gander shows the film available on DVD from Blockbuster’s website, while some sketchy looking offerings can be found on Amazon. The ratings I’ve seen are all over the map, so who knows just what we’re dealing with here. All I know for now are these two truths: Christmas came late for Chris, and my grandkids will someday inherit my framed posterof this.

Dig it!

Exclusive: The Collection Goes Before Cameras; Co-writer Patrick Melton Speaks

With director Marcus Dunstan’sThe Collectioncurrently shooting in Georgia, we caught up this morning with Patrick Melton, the man who along with Dunstan co-scripted the upcoming sequel to their 2009 flickThe Collectoras well as several other notable horror films (theFeastfranchise andSaw IV-VIIas well as the currently in pre-productionPiranha 3DD).

Exclusive: The Collection Goes Before Cameras; Co-writer Patrick Melton Speaks“We're two days in,”Melton said ofThe Collection, which is currently shooting nights {see below photo from the set},“so it's early, but things are going well. It’s a twenty-eight-day shoot, which is nine days more than we had on the original film. This one is much more ambitious, and it has been coming along great. I'll be playing a fireman in a big scene we have planned this evening. That's all I can say, but when you see the film, look for me as Sexy Fireman #4.”

Directed by Dunstan (who made his directorial debut with the mostly well receivedThe Collector),The Collection’s makeup effects are once again being handled by gore-guru Gary Tunnicliffe, who provided the significant splatter for its predecessor (as well as effects forScream 4andMy Bloody Valentine, among others). Also returning to the fold is lead actor Josh Stewart, reprising his role of the unlucky burglar‘Arkin’, a man caught up in the machinations of the film’s masked sadist.

“We're all cast up at this point, or at least pretty close to it,”Melton communicated of those joining Stewart before the cameras, which include,“Emma Fitzpatrick (The Social Network), Lee Tergesen (OZ, Monster), and Christopher McDonald (Requiem for a Dream, Boardwalk Empire){pictured below, l-r}amongst many others. We have a good mix of young and veteran actors, and everyone has been really excited thus far.”

Exclusive: The Collection Goes Before Cameras; Co-writer Patrick Melton Speaks

As for where the Liddell Entertainment production has set up,“We're shooting in Atlanta,”said Melton.“It has a ton of great old buildings that we're using for various larger sets. While the first one was mainly contained to a house in the middle of nowhere, the scale is larger on this one in all regards. I don't want to give anything away, but the opening ‘massacre’ is pretty cool. With the Saw films, we always shot for a couple of ‘awe’ moments in terms of spilling blood, and this one could be pretty spectacular. We'll see how it comes out.”

For more on the film, see ourprior conversation with Melton here.

Sundance 2011: The Trailer Debut: Septien

Well, the trailer for Michael Tully'sSeptien, which will be playing at this year's Sundance Film Festival, is finally here, and we have to say ... this doesn't look exactly like the horror film we've been lead to believe that it is. Though it really could go either way.

Septienfollows what happens when a reclusive sports hustler returns home to his family farm after years of absence to reunite with his two eccentric, unhinged and emotionally damaged brothers. Yep, could very well be one hell of a psycho kind of family reunion. Lord knows we all have them and secretly wish that they could end in bloodshed.

Should we continue to cover it? Let us know what you think below.

Get Nailed By the First Clip From The Bleeding

It's Thursday. You're sitting there wishing the weekend was here. Minutes are passing like hours. How about a little gore and suffering to get you through? Usually does the trick for us!

From the Press Release:
Anchor Bay Entertainment, in association with Gigapix Releasing and Iron Bull Films, will release the vampire thrillerThe Bleeding (review here)on DVD March 1, 2011. In the tradition of Blade, The Lost Boys and From Dusk Till Dawn, The Bleeding is an action-packed tale of fangs, guns, tattoos and frontier justice on the mean streets and features an all-star cast including Vinnie Jones (X-Men: The Last Stand, Snatch), Michael Matthias, rap superstar DMX (Romeo Must Die), Rachelle Leah, Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2), tattooed reality star Kat Von D (“L.A. Ink”) and Armand Assante (“Gotti,” American Gangster, Judge Dredd).

Shawn Black (Matthias) knows pain. His parents and brother were killed in front of him. Beaten, bloodied and left for dead by a gang of ruthless vampires led by the charismatic Cain (Jones) and his lethal lieutenant Vanya (Kat Von D). But like his would-be murderers, Shawn has come back from the brink of death to take his revenge. He soon comes upon Reverend Roy (Madsen), who reveals to Shawn his calling as a“slayer,” the only human capable of truly destroying vampires.

Dark, brooding and with a palpable layer of cowboy justice, The Bleeding spins a tale of otherworldly influences running headlong into the very human thirst for revenge. Redemption comes with a heavy, and bloody, price in The Bleeding.

Going Hiking? Hold on to Your Pelt!

If you're hiking in the woods of an area in Kentucky named Caveland you're probably just asking for bad things to happen.Peltpurports to tell the tale of the bad things that befell seven hikers in July of 1991 when they decided to go camping in the woods of Caveland, Kentucky.

Sudden, gory death hides behind every bush. When beautiful Jennifer and her friends embark on a backpacking excursion deep into the woods, they come chest to chest with an evil as old as the trees. Listen...above the crackling of the campfire...is that the sound of a twig snapping or your best girlfriend's neck? The interlopers discover that when the locals warn you not to trespass, it's a warning you should heed.

Justin Welborn (The Crazies,The Final Destination), Ashley Watkins, and Travis Goodman star in this horror feature from director Richard Swindell, who also wrote the film with Oscar D. Gomez. What stuck out to me most in the trailer below was the line"FROM THE MASTERS OF TRUE CRIME..."According to IMDB, Swindell's previous directing credits have all been true crime documentaries:Women on Death Row 2,Women on Death Row 3,Women on Death Row 4, andMunchausen Moms. Not sure that warrants of"masters of true crime"tag, but they've still got more of a claim on the title than Ulli Lommel.

Peltwon awards at the 2010 Big Bear Film Festival and now we will all get to experience the terror on March 8th when Osiris Entertainment releases the film to DVD. Have a look at the trailer below.

Trailer Exposes Underground Lizard People to the World

Move over, Cannabalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. Here come theUnderground Lizard People. ULP? Doesn't quite have the same ring to it as CHUD.

Director Jared Cohn co-wrote the screenplay with Ed Erdalac for this allegedly true story of five young documentary filmmakers that venture into the Banning tunnels of downtown Los Angeles to investigate the urban legend of cannabilistic lizard people and suffer the grave misfortune of finding precisely what they went looking for. Caitlin Gold, Clint Byrne, Colin Walker, Lauren Klemp, Hugo Dillon and Courtney Hammond star.

The ever vigilant Avery Guerra brings word of the film and its trailer. From what I'm seeing,Underground Lizard Peoplelooks like a feature-length episode of Animal Planet's"Lost Tapes". Probably a bigger budget than the average"Lost Tapes"episode, too.

First Review from Scream 4 Test Screening Calls Film"Bloodiest of them All"

We told you about the special test screening of Wes Craven'sScream 4out in Pittsburgh a few days ago, and now that it's come to pass, an early review is in.

The reactions come from a viewer via theScreamTrilogy.netfan site. Mind you, this is a review by someone who may very well have liked it because they're a bigScreamfranchise fan so take it with a grain of salt. Still, the insight is interesting.

"It was phenomenal! What can I say. I was the first in line, and my friend and I waited in the line for about an hour and a half. They let a bunch of ethnic minorities in first, but once we got in, the excitement hit. This outshines the 3rd one easily. Definitely the bloodiest of all of them, but I feel like they’ll edit some of it down. An unrated DVD would be nice to have though. All the acting was superb. Not one flaw. The opening scene was hilarious and brutal. Definitely a lot of great Williamson writing. The characters all felt very genuine. Gale was back to her bitchy self, and had a bunch of greatone-liners. The music seemed to be recycled Beltrami music from 1-3 but it worked well. The ending was insanity. Easily the best of all the series, in my opinion, anyways. It didn’t end when I thought it would, and they even commented on that in the movie. The crowd experience was great, and everybody was totally into it. Cannot WAIT to see this in theaters come April. Hopefully they don’t change anything. Loved it loved it loved it."

Those damned lucky"ethnic minorities"- they always get the good stuff first! While outshiningScream 3isn't exactly a Herculean task, we remain very hopeful that Wes will once again deliver the goods. The man is due.

Look forScream 4in theatres on April 15th, 2011, and to stay on top of things, be sure tofollow @wescraven on Twitter.

    Synopsis
"Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) and Gale (Courteney Cox), who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill (Emma Roberts) and her Aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell). Unfortunately Sidney's appearance also brings about the return of Ghostface, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger."

Giles isn't Happy - Anthony Stewart Head Talks Buffy Remake

Anthony Stewart HeadMore"Buffy"alumni are voicing their concerns regarding Warner Bros. proposed reboot of the much beloved"Buffy the Vampire Slayer"franchise, and it's as ugly as you'd expect.

RecentlyThe Huffington Postcaught up with actor Anthony Stewart Head who played Buffy's watcher Giles on the show, and he certainly didn't hold back his feelings about the upcoming theatrical feature.

"It's a horrible idea,"says Head."It's a horrible idea in as much as Buffy was a great conceit. It was a great story. ... I don't feel that you can then remake that without the original creator on board. It doesn't make sense. And I mean, somewhere down the line, I suppose sometimes ... I suppose you could, but it never sits very comfortably. With someone like Joss, why would you want to? Well, I know why you want to. You want to make money. As he said recently, 'I hope it's good!' {laughs} I love him."

Staci Layne Wilson's upcoming short film"The Key to Annabel Lee"has, in Staci's words, evolved into a form of"installation art", and to give us a better idea of what to expect, she's provided Dread Central with two new exclusive stills and a quick clip.

The film stars Cherilyn Wilson (Parasomnia), Corrie Shenigo (After You), Diane Ayala Goldner (Feast I, II, III), and Nivek Ogre (Repo! The Genetic Opera) as"The Narrator". It involves an evil seductive wolf character (played by Goldner) and three incarnations of the tragic character of Edgar Allan Poe'sAnnabel Lee, played by three different actresses (Wilson, Shenigo, and Staci herself). Shot in Southern California on the shores of southern Los Angeles beaches,"The Key to Annabel Lee"uses gorgeous sweeping shots of ocean vistas as a backdrop for much of the action.

You'll see one of those ocean vistas in the clip below (it's just the"first wave"of sneak peeks Staci will be providing over the coming weeks), and for a look at the teaser trailer, be sure to visitBlue Streak Productions.

"The Key to Annabel Lee"is already slated to screen during the 4th annualViscera Film Festival, which takes place July 17, 2011 in LA. For more info and to stay up-to-date on the film's progress, visitBlue Streak Productionsand followStaci Layne Wilson on Twitter.

Blast from the Past: del Toro Directed Wolfman Themed Commercial

Yep, the news is slow right now, but the lull won't last long (it never does) so while waiting for the biz to officially reopen its doors for 2011, why not dig around for some mostly missed coolness?

That's just what Devin did on his latest websiteBadass Digest. The home for everything badasshas uncovered a Spanish language trailer from 1991 directed by the great Guillermo del Toro (who also appears as its star) that offers one hell of a hairy take on stomach problems.

At the very least it has a much better transformation sequence than the new version ofThe Wolfman. Dig on it below!

    Happy New Year 2011!

The year 2010 was a truly strange animal. Sure it was filled with the usual ups, downs, surprises, and letdowns, but it was also home to odd events we never saw coming like MGM nearly folding,Paranormal Activity 2not being just a cash-in, and Uwe Boll actually making a good movie in the form ofRampage.

Despite its totally off kilter ways, the one constant this year has been you guys and the loyalty and love you've always shown us. In this business and industry believe us when we tell you that it's easy to get frustrated and want to throw in the towel. Hell, we've all been there, but then it happens. You meet a fan or you receive an e-mail that totally hammers home why we still do this ... it's because of our love for all things spooky.

Thanks for standing by us, guys, and thanks for putting up with our lunacy and fair share of shit! We have a ton of cool things for you to dig on coming up, and hopefully 2011 will be a banner year for us all. If not, I'm sure we'll have a Platinum Dunes movie or something else to make fun of!

Have a happy, healthy, and safe one!

    Happy New Year 2011!
