The Wolfman and the Black Swan Take Home Oscars

While it was a fairly slow night for horror at the"83rd Annual Academy Awards", a couple of genre flicks did manage to take home some gold and for that we are thankful!

Rick Baker and Dave Elsey took home the coveted award for their make-up work onThe Wolfman, and while the movie kind of sucked there's no doubt that the film was home to some amazing creature effects. Now if only the powers that be would have let Baker do a proper transformation instead of that CGI hack-job we got served.

Also a winner tonight, Darren Aronofsky'sBlack Swanwhich saw an Oscar for Natalie Portman who won for Best Actress.

Congrats to everyone who won -- and for the love of God, fire this year's writers and next year hire a comedian to host. Something wrong with bringing back Stewart? Maybe Conan? The crazy Jewish lady who interrupted one of last year's winners during his acceptance speech? Or how about anyone who can bring some life to what was tonight's truly dull affair. You know shit is bad when you have to resort to bringing back the long dead spirit of Bob Hope to liven things up.

The Wolfman and the Black Swan Take Home Oscars

BONUS FEATURE:

Arguably the only thing that made tonight's presentation even remotely tolerable was host James Franco's bizarre need to constantly be staring off to the right and the hilarious and at timesverywronglive tweeting by The Foywonderwhich we've brought to you below via chronological transcript. Enjoy.

My master control job is requiring me to run the Academy Awards. Please God, don't let there be any musical numbers.

Did the producer of the Oscars used to play Ralph Malph on Happy Days?

The only Oscar broadcast I've ever enjoyed was the one in Naked Gun 3. These award shows need more Phil Donahue rampages.

That opening monologue of Franco and Hathaway introducing their relatives makes me take back what I said about not wanting musical numbers

Kirk Douglas is truly a legend but listening to him present an award is as sad& painful as Dick Clark still doing the New Year's countdown

And the Oscar goes to Melissa Leo - not for The Fighter but as a belated award for her role as"Cookie"the hooker in 1985's Streetwalkin'

Was that look on Melissa Leo's face because she couldn't believe she won or because she couldn't understand whose name Kirk Douglas read?

Brolin& Bardem's ice cream suits just blew out the chroma at my workplace. Thanks Oscars!

Will Aaron Sorkin thank the guy who sells him hallucinogenic mushrooms?

Do people realize that the Oscar winning writer of The King's Speech last screenwriting gig was Kung Fu Killer starring David Carradine?

The only thing I ever want to see Russell Brand in is the woodchipper from Fargo.

I hope they try to play Christian Bale off during his acceptance speech and he dives into the orchestra pit in a rage-fueled rampage.

Notice that the director didn't have the cajones to play Bale off even as he began to ramble on? They know better.

Only in Mississippi would a monster truck jam purchase local commercial time during the Academy Awards.

The Academy Awards are rated TV-14? The sudden appearance of that rating in the corner of the screen was all Melissa Leo's fault, wasn't it?

Is it my imagination or are there barnacles growing on Cate Blanchett's dress?

They should have included me in that montage so I could declare my love for the Maniac Cop 2 closing credits rap

Every Randy Newman song sounds like every other Randy Newman song. He's the Firehouse of Oscar nominated song makers.

Time for the performing of the Best Song nominees. Or as I call it: Bathroom Break!

Amy Adams is dressed like she'll soon be forced to marry Lo Pan.

Holy crap! Horshak just won an Oscar!

Oh, please, please, please let Banksy sneak on stage and tag Oprah's big ass!

This Oscar show has been so terrible I hear Roger Ebert just ripped off his prosthetic chin and flung it at his TV screen in disgust.

Randy Newman just won for recording the same song he's sung for the last decade and a half.

Celine Dion singing over the"In Memoriam"montage only makes me wish I was a part of it.

This just in: Banksy has left the Kodak Theater but he did not exit through the gift shop. ***RIMSHOT*** See, I could be writing this show.

I think one of Doctor Who's incarnations just won Best Director

Francis Ford Coppola gets the lifetime achievement award for producing the Jeepers Creepers movies. Horror fans and NAMBLA both thank you.

The next co-worker that asks me if the Oscars will end on time will suffer a fate worse than having to sit through this intolerable show.

I was hoping Natalie Portman would thank the green screens from the Star Wars prequels.

Colin Firth's acceptance speech was as dull and drawn out as this whole show has felt. Now I'm asking myself how much time this has left.

How cool would it be if when Harvey Weinstein takes the stage Spielberg suckerpunches him for stealing Saving Private Ryan's best pic Oscar?

If only this childrens choir was out there singing the Oscar winning song"It's Hard Out There for a Pimp"from Hustle& Flow.

And with the show now over Anne Hathaway can finally go backstage to be hooked up to that Valium IV she's been needing for three hours.

One of the closing credits was"VOICE OF BOB HOPE"and it was not credited to Bob Hope? WTF?

It's finally over. I think I posted more tonight than I have the whole time I've been on Twitter. I swear I will never do it again.

The therapist is involved with a bizarre black market narcotics trade, in which the semen from human mutations created during WWII Nazi experiments is harvested and processed for its psychic effects on the human brain. And now the last known mutant is dying, and a suitable replacement must be found…"

Bitch: Written and Directed by Simon Rumley

"Stuck in a destructive relationship that isn’t going anywhere and lousy dead-end jobs which have no future, Claire and Pete live in a council flat and are united only in their love of rock music. The flame of passion having long since died, the couple derives a strange sexual pleasure from an unspoken sadomasochistic role-playing game whereClaire finds new and inventive ways of mistreating Pete – and Pete, ever the devoted lap dog, takes what she dishes out time and time again. But in an unspoken game the boundaries are hazy, and when Claire unwittingly takes things one step too far, Pete devises a way to teach the bitch to heel, once and for all."

Sucker Punch is an epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary.

She has been locked away against her will, but Babydoll (Emily Browning) has not lost her will to survive. Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls— the outspoken Rocket (Jena Malone), the street-smart Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), the fiercely loyal Amber (Jamie Chung), and the reluctant Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish) — to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino), and the High Roller (Jon Hamm).

Led by Babydoll, the girls engage in fantastical warfare against everything from samurais to serpents, with a virtual arsenal at their disposal. Together, they must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive. But with the help of a Wise Man (Scott Glenn), their unbelievable journey— if they succeed — will set them free.

Could It Be? Slain Vampire Back for More on True Blood Season 4?

That's the thing about television and films ... good characters rarely stay dead. They usually just evolve somehow and become something else. That's exactly the case with"True Blood"Season 4 as a very familiar face that we thought we had seen the last of is coming back!

According toTVLineAllan Hyde will reprise his role as Eric’s late, forever young-looking maker Godric when the HBO drama resumes this summer.

Even more interesting,"True Blood"executive producer Alan Ball told the site that fans will be seeing“a different side of Godric.” Very cool! Let's just hope the re-addition of this character doesn't get lost amongst the several thousand plot lines of last season. Time to get things back on track, fangbangers!

Giant 3D Spiders to be Unleashed on New York City! Exclusive Casting News!

Every arachnophobe's worst nightmare is headed to the big screen withSpiders 3D. As New York City is poised to fall into their enormous three-dimensional web, only a milk maiden, a Power Ranger, and a Starship Trooper can save the Big Apple from experiencing an eight-legged apocalypse.

Shockingly,"Eight-Legged Apocalypse"has not yet been used as the title of a Syfy original movie.

ThoughSpiders 3Dsounds like the making of a Syfy flick - both the production company Nu Image and the film's director have a slew of Syfy movies to their credit, I have been assured that a theatrical release is the plan. When I first reported on this film back in May of last year it was simplySpider 3D(story here)and little was known. Looks like the spiders have since multiplied, production has wrapped, and a new plot synopsis has emerged:

"Following a crash of an old Soviet space station in New York City's subway tunnel, a new species of poisonous spiders is discovered. Inadvertently the spiders mutate to gigantic proportions and wreak havoc on the entire city."

I've been told from a source close to the production to expect multiple large spiders and one really big spider.

This weekend you'll get to see Christa Campbell in 3D inDrive Angry;Spiders 3Dwill give you even more of the lovely Miss Campbell in three voluptuous dimensions as the2001 Maniacs"Milk Maiden"gets top billing in this arach-attack. She'll get spider wrangling help from someone no stranger to dealing with giant insects: Patrick Muldoon, who you probably best remember getting his brains sucked out by a big bug inStarship Troopers. Another spider fighter will be Johnny Yong Bosch, also a seasoned veteran in the field of giant monster fighting; Bosch experienced a three-year tour of duty as a"Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger".

Tibor Takacs has spent the past several years helming Syfy movies, including the mutant monster spider flickIce Spiders, but horror fans should also recognize him as the director of the under-appreciated late Eighties horror flicksThe GateandI, Madman. Takacs is also credited as a co-writer ofSpiders 3Dwith scripter Joseph Farrugia.

BetweenSpiders 3Dand the announcedKingdom of the Spiders3D remake, the coming year is not going to be a good time for arachnophobic people heading to the movies.

Mark Steensland and Stephen Geoffreys to be Haunted by The Weeping Woman

One filmmaker we've had our eye on for a while is Mark Steensland. The man's made some truly tremendous short films including the critically acclaimed,The Ugly File, and now his back with a new short-form fright fest along with Evil Ed himself!

From the Press Releaae
Award-winning director Mark Steensland has wrapped principal photography on his latest short film,“The Weeping Woman.”

Tony Award nominee Stephen Geoffreys (Fright Night, 976-Evil) stars in the film based on a short story by acclaimed British horror author Paul Kane (The Hellraiser Films and Their Legacy).

Shot in the empty, quiet woods of northwestern Pennsylvania,“The Weeping Woman” shows what can happen when you take a shortcut on a long drive home.

Steensland is no stranger to horror, having won first prize at two separate film festivals for his previous shorts,“The Ugly File,” and “Peekers.” Steensland says this short is different because of Geoffreys.

“I was working on this film when I met Stephen at the 2010 Eerie Horror Film Festival,” Steensland said. “I knew immediately that he was perfect for this part.” Even though Geoffreys had never appeared in a short film before, he agreed after being impressed by the script and Steensland’s earlier efforts.

“Mark’s film packs into a few pages the whole life of my character,” Geoffreys said. “Besides, performing an 8-page script is ideal for an attention-span deficient like me.”

The film, which takes place almost entirely outdoors, was shot over two days in below-freezing weather.

“The original script from Paul Kane had the story taking place in the summer,” said Steensland. “I’ve always been a big fan of snowbound horror movies like The Shining and thought the change would add a real layer of creepiness to the film.”

Viewers will get a chance to see for themselves when Steensland takes the film on the festival circuit this spring.

Dread Central's own Melissa Bostaph also stars. For more information, visitMarkSteensland.com. Dig on some fresh stills and a one-sheet below. More soon!

In the Name of the Boll - A Berlin Film Festival Lawsuit

In what may very well be the oddest movie news story of the day, Uwe Boll is suing the Berlin Film Festival over their refusal to screen his newAuschwitzmovie. Not because they find the film to be too disturbing or horribly exploitive or because Germans don't like to be reminded of their shameful past. No, Boll just doesn't want to pay the $170 entry fee.

Uwe BollWe all know Uwe Boll has become infamous for a series of ineptly assembled video game movies. In recent years he's gone more the indie route with a series of unflinching low budget movies focusing mostly on the very depths of human depravity. Humanity doesn't get any more depraved than the Holocaust, and the extremely graphic trailer for his new filmAuschwitzhad the Internet abuzz with most stating how horribly exploitive it appeared. Boll argues that any other filmmaker making such a film would potentially be Oscar bound. The actual quality ofAuschwitzremains to be seen, but it won't be seen at the Berlin Film Festival. Here's theHollywood Reporterto explain why the movie won't be screened there this year:

At issue is the 125 Euro entry fee all films are required to pay to be considered for the Berlin festival. Boll refused to pay the fee to submit Auschwitz, claiming the fest, and director Dieter Kosslick, was acting in bad faith and would not judge the film on its merits.

“Kosslick has been fighting me for the last 25 years, as Berlin festival director and before, when he was head of (German regional film board) the NRW Filmstiftung,” Boll told THR. “I don’t believe the Berlinale handles all films fairly. Kosslick has his deals with the major studios and invites his old pals from the Filmstiftung days. There isn’t fair competition.”

Boll’s suit will claim that many films picked to screen at the Berlinale -- particularly prominent Hollywood films -- did not pay that fee, making the festival criminally liable.

The Berlinale's counterpoint to Boll's claim is that the entry fee is only required of films that apply to be screened at the fest and that, according to fest guidelines, the fee is usually waived for films that are invited to play.

I'm not sure if this is Boll fighting the good fight against the system or just him being stubborn in the face of a perceived longtime rivalry with a little dash of a Rodney Dangerfield"I Get No Respect"complex. Either way, if I were the Berlin Film Festival organizers, I really don't think I would want to tick off a guy who has spent the past few years making movies about mass murder. Did they not seeRampage? That's another way to close a film festival - permanently.

Will Denis O'Hare Be Back for True Blood Season Four?

Our main complaint about Season 3 of HBO's"True Blood"was that there were too many extraneous characters. However, no one could accuse Russell Edgington, the Vampire King of Mississippi, of being extraneous in the least. So we've been curious if Denis O'Hare would be reprising the role in Season 4. It seems the answer is a definite maybe.

Will Denis O'Hare Be Back for True Blood Season Four?O'Hare recently toldTHR's The Live Feed"I left them on a high. They have been very, very nice to me, and they tell me that they think I'm going to come back. And I'm waiting. We'll see what happens."

What would the storyline be?

"Someone discussed a possible idea with me, which, of course, I can't tell you,"O'Hare said."But it's a very cool idea. It's not far-fetched, but it's not something that you would see coming."

Expect the"True Blood"news to start flowing a bit more heavily over the coming weeks as filming is currently under way for Season 4, which is scheduled to debut in the summer of 2011. For more visit HBO'sofficial"True Blood"site.

Rest in Peace Charles Sellier Jr.

Charles Sellier Jr.Unless you're a big fan of either Christian films or the old TV show"Grizzly Adams"the name Charles Sellier Jr. may not exactly jump out at you.

Though he didn't dabble in our genre much, he did give us one of the single most controversial horror films of all time, and it's with a heavy heart that we report he is no longer with us.

On Monday, the director of 1984 slasher phenomenonSilent Night, Deadly Night, Charles Sellier Jr. was found dead in his home near Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. Sources close to Sellier declined to specify the cause of death. He was 67.

Sellier was best known for creating the book and television versions of"Grizzly Adams". After 1984, he left the horror genre behind and went on to create dozens of family friendly TV shows, many of which had deeply religious themes. You have to admit though, given the wildfire of controversySilent Night, Deadly Nightsparked he really went out with a bang!

We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our sincerest condolences to Sellier's friends, family, and constituents. Rest in peace, kind sir, and thank you for starting a new Christmas tradition for horror fans everywhere.
